About us
Why the naked grocer
We called ourselves the naked grocer because it is like us, a little bit fun but with a serious message, we believe in the nakedness of the product, not every apple needs to be vac packed, in a cellophane wrapper or punnet we love fruit ,veg and flowers and believe they are best as nature intended….
NAKED.
the true definition of naked in the oxford dictionary is
naked. adjective
- without the usual covering
- not concealed: undisguised e.g the naked truth which encapsulates what we are.
who are we
We are a family run greengrocer, who believe in good old fashioned customer service, excellent quality fresh produce but the difference is we don’t feel that this entitles us to charge the earth!
This is where our strap line and company motto comes into it, Fresh Friendly and Fair.
After the huge decline in independent retail and the lack of effort and energy the supermarkets were putting into this sector and the prices the farm shops were charging.
we thought we could do this better.
where/when did it start
After 6 months of looking for the right premises for the first Naked grocer and our flagship store we found a lovely site in walton.
Although just a shell at the time we could really see the potential, after a further 2 months of hard work, stress, ruined clothes and take aways we opened our doors on the 23rd of September 2009.
goals/targets
Our aim is to give everybody the opportunity to enjoy the finest, freshest fruit and Vegetables whatever your budget.
Flavour for us is crucial and unbelievably it seems that this has been forsaken for uniformity and shelf life… which is important but not as important as the flavour, we will only buy/sell produce that we feel eats or tastes as it should.
ethical
Although our responsible and ethical outlook means that not only do we work very hard to enable you to buy the best produce at a fair price, we are also mindful of the grower, who without them lets face it, would leave our plates a little on the bare side.
We will always support local and UK growers first and our very proud of the UK’s agricultural and horticultural history we will certainly not stand by whilst it continues to decline.
Saying that, we also offer a wonderful range of imported products which we cannot grow on our somewhat cold and wet island. For this we always try to buy seafreighted products and always only the best quality.
We still believe that every grower has the right to earn a living whether they be in Africa or Amersham south america or southampton.
we are very aware of the effect on the envoiroment that business can have and we do everything we can to have the minimal negative effect ,from our degradable carrier bags to minimal packaging policy to recycling everything and anything we can…
we even do nearly all our local deliveries on foot!!!!
